Shabani Azmi is a veteran Bollywood actress who is well known for her roles on the Indian Screens. Now she has consented to play the mother of a lesbian daughter, in an upcoming feature film, written by Pakistani actor-comedian Fawzia Mirza.
As the script goes, Shabana spends most of her time watching television soaps and is unaware of the activities of her daughter who is following an inappropriate path.
The movie story centers on the activities of Zaynab who is in the 30-something age bracket Pakistani living in Chicago with her mother. The movie progresses to show Zaynab falling for Alma, a bold and bright Mexican woman who explores her identity, life, love and wrestling.
Once the announcement was made, Pakistani film-maker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy took to Twitter to congratulate Mirza. “Looking forward to your new film! Best of luck,” she wrote.
Shabana left for Chicago last week to be a part of the shooting. In a selfie with Azmi posted on Instagram, Ghazala Mirza, the movie writer confirmed that work on the project is already under way. “Day eight Signature Move and day one for Shabana Azmi,” she captioned the image.
It may be remembered that Azmi is not a stranger to taboo subjects. She played a critically acclaimed role in Deepa Mehta’s Fire way back in 1996. Similar issue was on in the movie.
